Michael Copon: I’ve Got 60 Pounds on Taylor Lautner
Looks like Michael Copon and Taylor Lautner will be duking it out for the role of Jacob Black!
Michael, 26, just spoke with J-14 to talk about nabbing himself the perfect part in New Moon, the upcoming sequel to Twilight.
On what he’s been doing to prepare: I feel like I need to bulk down. Right now I’m close to 200 pounds of muscle. Taylor’s [Lautner] probably what, 140, if he’s lucky? I’m already 200 pounds, so there’s no need for me to get any bigger. Plus he’s 5′6″ and I’m 6′2″. In the book, he grows eight inches and I’m exactly eight inches taller than Taylor. Huge difference.
On why he should get the role of Jacob Black: I have nothing against Taylor personally. I think he’s great and tremendous at what he does. But it’s just adjusting to the fact that Jacob has to grow. It’s a matter of going with the storyline. It goes with the territory. I see so much in Jacob Black that I feel like wasn’t brought to the first film that if I had the opportunity, I would totally create an amazing character.
On the books: I’ve read the first one and I’ve dabbled through the Cliffs Notes of the second and third ones. I haven’t had time to actually sit down and read the whole book, but I kind of know what happens.

Absolutey do not change from Taylor. Copon has his qualities but Lautner is already in our minds as the character. And he seems to have the character down very well. He was SUPPOSED to be this small but endearing character in the first one. It is supposed to be kind of a surprise that he ends up being such a huge part of the story and of Bella’s life. That is what makes it interesting. He is younger than Bella and though he has a crush he is immature and is still a teenager even at the end of the fourth book. He is not supposed to be as sophisticated as Edward. That is the point. Granted he must go from happy-go-lucky to a little more brooding and serious when all the changes happen but we have to see this good-natured kid throughout most of New Moon before we get to that. He is the warmth and the earthy part of this story while Edward is the cool and unearthly part. Keep Taylor Lautner.

What I find funny is that Michael Copon’s acting is not really good. He speaks like he has the script in front of his nose. My 3 yr old acts better then him.
I am Team Taylor all the way. I hope to see him as Jacob again. Otherwise Im really not gonna waste my time seeing a movie where the main character sounds like a robot.

This guy may be cocky as hell, but he has a very good point. Jacob is suppossed to grow like crazy in the second book. Taylor Lauther is obviously done growing and currently he’s not that much taller or bigger than Kristen Stewart. He makes for a good human Jacob, but Michael Copon makes a better werewolf Jacob.
This is kind of a lose lose situation. Either they get a new Jacob and keep the movie as authentic as possible, or they keep the current Jacob and risk having many Twilighters upset over how Lauther looks nothing like the post-Twilight Jacob. Personally, I’d rather the movie be more authentic than have the casting directors try to keep Lauther around because it will make his fans happy. I’m watching the movie for Edward and Bella anyways.
