Michael Copon: I’ve Got 60 Pounds on Taylor Lautner
Looks like Michael Copon and Taylor Lautner will be duking it out for the role of Jacob Black!
Michael, 26, just spoke with J-14 to talk about nabbing himself the perfect part in New Moon, the upcoming sequel to Twilight.
On what he’s been doing to prepare: I feel like I need to bulk down. Right now I’m close to 200 pounds of muscle. Taylor’s [Lautner] probably what, 140, if he’s lucky? I’m already 200 pounds, so there’s no need for me to get any bigger. Plus he’s 5′6″ and I’m 6′2″. In the book, he grows eight inches and I’m exactly eight inches taller than Taylor. Huge difference.
On why he should get the role of Jacob Black: I have nothing against Taylor personally. I think he’s great and tremendous at what he does. But it’s just adjusting to the fact that Jacob has to grow. It’s a matter of going with the storyline. It goes with the territory. I see so much in Jacob Black that I feel like wasn’t brought to the first film that if I had the opportunity, I would totally create an amazing character.
On the books: I’ve read the first one and I’ve dabbled through the Cliffs Notes of the second and third ones. I haven’t had time to actually sit down and read the whole book, but I kind of know what happens.

Copon hasn’t even read the other books! Just the flippin’ cliff notes?! What makes him think he knows the character well enough he should be able to play it, just because he read some cliff notes?
Not to mention, he may have 8 inches on Taylor, but in the beginning of New Moon Jacob hasn’t grown much. He doesn’t start growing until a little bit into it. So he’d still have to have the effect the he’s getting bigger.
This guy is really getting on my nerves. I want to slap him. I don’t know why, but I seriously have the urge to just deck Michael Copon in the face.
WTF.. this guy acts like he has the part already. But the thing is that Taylor is actually working out and gaining pounds to keep the Jocab Black role. This guys is basically saying that hes to big n he needs 2 size down. DON’T BOTHER! Taylor is staying cause he is Jacob Black
Um, no. This guy comes off as arrogant. And why does he have to put down Taylor to make himself look better? He says that he has nothing against Taylor, yet he is basically insulting Taylor. A humble, professional actor would say something along the lines of this: “I’m thrilled that I’m being considered for this role.” That’s it. Why drag Taylor into it? The decision is between Summit and each actor. If Summit wants to keep Taylor, they’ll keep Taylor. If they want to replace Taylor with Copon, they’ll replace him. This battle is between the studio and the actor. Not between actor and actor.

Taylor has time to not only ‘bulk’ himself up, but look more mature as well.

I’d be upset if they replaced Taylor. Sure, if the role needed him to be 35, that’s a different story - then I’d say use Michael Copon.
If there is any recasting - it needs to be for Bella. Don’t get me wrong, Kristen Stewart was good in the few movies of hers I have seen (liked her alot in The Messengers), but seriously - - she’s not the Bella type. Maybe in appearance, but that is it.
But as for the Lautner/Copon debate… I say KEEP TAYLOR!!!

I am just completely amazed (my jaw is on the floor) at this guy’s arrogance, especially in light of the fact that he has nothing on his resume to back his cockiness up. I’m starting to think he’s enjoying this and deliberately stirring the pot simply for all the publicity it’s garnering him. Copon, step off mate. You cannot act and do not belong anywhere near the big screen. Stick to TV and straight to video jobs.
