Hairspray 2: White Lipstick — Official Movie Title!
Hairspray director Adam Shankman spilled the beans about the sequel to New Line’s blockbuster movie-musical and just how Zac Efron and Brittany Snow fit into the big picture.
Hairspray 2: White Lipstick is the sequel’s official movie title, which was actually the original title for 1998’s Hairspray. Shankman dished to MTV on more of teen idol Zac, 21, and less of Brittany, 22. Here’s what he had to say:
On Link Larkin getting hooked on acid: “I think that’s probably part of the treatment that won’t get used. And in the treatment, [Efron’s drug use] is an accident. That’s the kind of stuff where you’re like: ‘Yeah, I don’t know if that’s going to work.’”
On who will take the place of the Von Tussles, the villians of the movie: “There’ll be a change in villains. [John Waters’ treatment] is ideas that we’re just going to pick and choose from, and we’ll see what happens with it. Probably [no Michelle Pfeiffer]. Not because we didn’t love her, but because we just thought different adversaries [would be necessary].”
On the Vietnam War backdrop: “No, it wasn’t Zac.”

Zac I think If You do Hairspray 2 you won’t be taken as a Serious Actor and I really dont want that to happen .
The Drug Thing would ruin it . HSM Was a movie alot of kids know you in and when they saw you in Hairspray you were seen as “Troy” to them. So Disney won’t like this I agree with #19 it would be bad idea. in 17 again I think You have taken one step forward but not speeding by ..! Wait a year to get into more serious acting but for now stop with the Musicals and Nikki and You won’t be good. Hairspray wasn’t my all time favourite very cheesy and plus you would have teh put on weight if you were teh go on for it !
RIP John Travolta’s Son
NO, NO, NO, NO, NO !!! The movie already sounds horrible. And why would we want our hottie, Zachary, to experiment on drugs !? That’s just WRONG !! Their gonna ruin the Hairspray name. Zachary, I’m begging you, DON’T DO IT.
NO ZAC DONT DO IT!!!!!!
i think zac shouldn’t do anymore musical cuz then he’ll be the musical guy.
Hold on!?!? Im SOOOOOOOOOOOO confused!!!!!!!!
Hairspray 2 will never ever be like HSM, HSM 2 and HSM 3 in audience support simply because Zac and Nikki Blonsky’s tandem is soooo disgusting!!!!!
C’mon people truth be told it’s never feasible!
i agree with #24 all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well at least we get to see zac again u know… but whatever i am still gonna see it.. cuz zacs in it.. and i hate nikki ad zac close together cuz nikki seems like inlove with him and zacs like uuuhhhh ok.. cuz of how she talks and everything
i think they’re trying to mank hairspray another high school musical…but im tellin ya…it aint gna work!!!
ALL 3 HSM movies were amazing and i dont think anything can top that…(except maybe GREASE…absolute classic)
This HS2 plot sounds horrible and meaningless…and waste of time n money…
i really like the first one….PLEASE dont ruin it by doin a sequal!!!!!!
P.S…ZANESSA FOREVER!!!
# 58 I agree with you
I totally agree with #50 dearie. What’s up with this obsession Shankman has for Zac Efron?? It’s disturbing. Zac needs to do other movies as well, and not be type-cast into musicals. Shankman needs to BACK OFF. He just wants him for himself.
And I agree it’s ludicrous for anyone to think Zac wants Nikki. I’m pretty sure Vanessa does NOT lose sleep over him doing a movie with Nikki Blonsky!!! LOL….not when he’s working with women like Brittany Snow, Clair Danes, Michelle Trachtenberg, etc.!!!
i think it will be cool…….why do u people hate nikki???
i personally don’t “hate” nikki.
i hate what her loud obnoxious overly obsessive mouth has to say. she’s riding the “i made a movie with zac efron” pony too long and needs to give it up. when you spend a large amount of time on a movie set with the costar, you’re going to grow a bond, which at one point can be called a best friend bond, for the time being. that bond went no where seeing as far as we know, no longer communicates with her.
if this was the 30’s and 40’s i would totally support zac and have him do a musical movie again, but that was the predominant genre of movies at the time, and he’s said that he looks up to gene kelly and fred astaire, which were big movie musical actors back in the day. nowadays there isn’t one strong genre that wins box office gold, one weekend a romantic comedy is ontop then a drama another weekend it’s a musical, and another it’s an animated movie. he needs to dip his foot in each pool WITH TIME. i also don’t want him to take a dramatic role, one he’s not super fond of, but is doing it so people can see that he’s not the musical guy, and is edgy…which i don’t think he’ll ever do.
I think Shankman should take into consideration that Hairspray had already made history with the musicals. Enough is enough lets preserved the sanctity of the original movie! I don’t think a sequel will do justice. Besides Zac and Nikki pairing is unimaginable the second time around……..
I don’t have a problem with Nikki like most of you do, i actually think they were great together in Hairspray. I just don’t think they should do a sequel just coz they want to milk in more money. They should leave the original alone! as for Zac he needs to move away from musicals, to get his acting career established
Thanks Lucy for your comment about the switching the posts around. That happened on a thread a couple weeks ago. I allowed that it was just a “glitch” but now I feel that Jared or an associate is manipulating threads on JJJ to try to get more hits which is not right. So, people be sure if you are directing a response to a certain poster that you make mention of that person’s moniker. That will stop this “bait and switch” situation.
Adam Shankman is gay. Hairspray 1 box office gross revenue was $200,000,000, however, it did have a budget of $75,000,000 that includes all salaries and expenses. Therefore, the net profit is approximately $125,000,000, which is 62% of net profit. Now Mammia Mia box office gross revenue is approximately $500,000,000 less budget of $42,000,000 making the net profit is approximately $458,000,000, and the ratio of net profit is 91%. HSM3 current box office gross revenue is approximately $237,500,000 less budget of approximately $13,300,000 making the net profit of $224,200,000 that makes the net profit ratio of 94%.
Comparing which movies are profitable…94% and 91% are very successful business financing the movies then the 62% of Hairspray. Looks to me that Hairspray paid out too much salaries to their actors/actresses. Probably why the movie production company wants to do HS2 to recapture their $75,000,000 budget from the first HS.
Are we going to meet Ashton? This plot has got to be punking some one. Either that or the writer is on drugs. Hair spray is a one shot deal. I was surprised the remake was a good as it was. When Zac makes an announcement that he is in HS2, then I’ll worry about it. So far it’s jus wishful thinking on the part of the writer and Nikki who need him to give this mess some credibility.
i have no problem with zikki thing at all because let’s face it, you fans exaggerate the simple things happened in the past and that can happen to us if we were in Nikki’s position.
( who wouldn’t have a crush on him ? hehe )
but I def. won’t see HS2 SIMPLY because no John Travolta and Michelle Preiffer ? These two made HAIRSPRAY WHAT IT WAS…
Zac was just the machine they use to attract younger audiences although he did a really outstanding job.
beside, the script was a total rubbish from what I’ve heard…
karen, I am sure it’s not JJ’s fault.
it was probably because those posts which suddenly appear are coming from a new user so their comment was on moderation…
I agree though that maybe those comments should appear on the next slot opens rather than it’s original time because it confuses people.
P.S. I absolutely LOVED hairspray. I was at a point where I watched it atleast once a week, and it got me into the original movie and the broadway show. So much that I saw the tour company and met marissa jaret winokur (the original Tracy on broadway) Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman (the score writers for the broadway show and movie musical)
so it’s not that I don’t like everything about her, just what she has to say.
off topic but to 71. lovebug…
Marissa is probably the sweetest girl ever, isn’t she ?
I love her….
Why extend on something that was already good to start with? It will ruin it I reckon, which is a shame. I hate those movies that are sequels and hardly have any of the original cast in them, its pointless.
I don’t think thay should do a Hairspray 2 the movie will suck.
Well i just said it because i cane off bashing this new idea qnd basged nikki so i wanted people to not get the wrong idea.
yeah she was great. I’ve actually met her a total of three times at dancing with the stars. I love her
haha
