Miley Cyrus Apologizes for ‘Goofy’ Pictures
Miley Cyrus hung out with her friends recently and took a picture that some people find to be offensive. Still in Nashville, the 16-year-old Disney starlet responded by posting this entry on MileyWorld:
“I can’t believe all of the silly STUFF that has been put out in the press this week! It really makes me sad that people want to tear other people down just for the sake of magazine sells and hits on websites! Unfortunately, it seems like BAD is what sells!
“I’ve also been told there are some people upset about some pictures taken of me with friends making goofy faces! Well, I’m sorry if those people looked at those pics and took them wrong and out of context! In NO way was I making fun of any ethnicity! I was simply making a goofy face. When did that become newsworthy? It seems someone is trying to make something out of nothing to me. If that would of been anyone else, it would of been overlooked! I definitely feel like the press is trying to make me out as the new ‘BAD GIRL’! I feel like now that Britney [Spears] is back on top of her game again, they need someone to pick on! Lucky me! Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know what is on my heart. You guys know me and have been by my side every step of the way!

I think that she is like Britney Spears in the fact that there are constant pictures of her out and a bout. Everywhere she goes, there are pictures of her. It was the same way with Britney in late 2007/early 2008. I am not saying that she should not have a life and stay at home all day, but do you really need to go out to eat every single day or go shopping everyday.
And she should have known that when she got famous that everyone would be in her personal life. When you are famous, you really don’t have a private life. So she really shouldn’t be crying about it or getting upset.

I love Miley but how can she expect to make a “funny” face like that and not have people take it out of context. Everyone knows that when people make faces like that with their eyes it usually has to do with asians. People get offened. Therefore it is newsworthy. It’s really not that shocking… I was personally a little bit offended at first (being an asian myself) even though I know she didn’t mean anything of it.
And I hate to say it but people aren’t going to stop focusing on your personal life anytime soon. You’re a huge celebritiy. I don’t think anyone is deliberately trying to “tear” her down. It is time that Miley realizes that a lot of young girls do look up to her. CLEARLY, it was offensive to some people. What is a “goofy” picture to her may be offensive and hurtful to others. A lot of the “bad” media that Miley gets is her own doing.
I understand that the media may be a little pushy about her personal life. But, the fact is, she IS in the spotlight. If she can’t handle the heat, then she should stay the heck out of the kitchen.

Um, a “goofy face”? Either she’s very ignorant or she’s pretending to be. I don’t care what she does in her personal life, but she should at least be responsible enough to own up for her actions. I think that she knew perfectly well what she was doing in those pictures and whether or not she meant them in an offensive way or a humorous way, she should at least acknowledge that it was a racial slur.

I personally was on the receiving end of many slanty-eyed faces when I was in elementary school, although that is not a reason why I am commenting about this issue. I don’t find the picture to be particularly offensive to myself, but the fact that so many people are taking this with a matter-of-fact attitude.
We learn not to say certain words about different races, but why is it alright to make these gestures about Asians when obviously some Asians are offended by it. Just because one Asian may be alright with their friends making these faces doesn’t mean that ALL Asians shouldn’t find it offensive.
On several different websites I am shocked to read comments that state that it is “ok” to make these faces because “everyone made them when they were a kid”. Just because these faces were made by some children at one point or another, does NOT mean that it’s not offensive to others.
Secondly, I highly doubt most of the people in that picture are “children”. Her boyfriend, for one, is 20 years old. And if Miley is considered a child, where are her parents? They seem to not be teaching her to grow up into a responsible adult.
Also, what was the point of her bringing up Britney into this whole issue? Sorry Miley, but you are no Britney. And most of the unwanted media attention is brought upon by yourself. You know you’re in the spotlight, so understand that you will be put under a lot of scrutiny. Stop whining about it and get over yourself.

for the ppl who say shes not apologizing in her blog… i sorta think its more apologizing if people were offended, but not for taking goofy pictures with friends. at least thats the way i kinda perceive it.

i mean, im 17 and viet, and my friends and i make “racist” jokes about myself and their cultures all the time. and no, i am not a self-hating asian and they are not self-hating hispanics, blacks, or whites, etc who make fun of our cultures to try to fit in. we just think its funny. we also make tons of dirty sex jokes, doesnt mean we actually do what we are joking about. i just think people throw the term “racist” out there way too easily. because then maybe i should be offended by people who think this is racist because they are also implying “slanted eyes” = asian. not all asians have slanted eyes. i have pretty “big” eyes for an asian if i do say so myself then. and yes, i know there is a history of people doing “slanted eyes” to mock asians. so should whites and other races who have “big” eyes call out the asian in the picture for being racist since his eyes are wider? it’s not like every race has a certain set of features - most have just been stereotyped.
people might say, so what if she was joking around with some friends in kkk outfits with a black friend or w/e? the thing is, that is on a completely different level than this whole thing. (and i know, racism is racism no matter what level, but i just dont believe racism is here this time). i think racism has a lot do do with intent (but also action of course). mileys actions may seem racist to some people, but i dont think she ever had any intent on being racist, aka saying shes superior to asians. again, i think she just wasnt thinking at the time if she was being offensive or not, especially with her asian friend right next to her.
and from the context of the picture, it really does seem like everyone was just goofing off. its only when you take out the context does it offend people. so is it right that people are taking the picture out of context to say its racist?

My goodness, this is absurd. As a half-Korean woman I can understand the offense, but she is a child! Children learn through trial and error. The photograph was clearly a case of friends poking fun at each other and no disrespect was meant to the Asian community at large. I’m Chinese but I don’t really find it offensive (OK, so I’m used to it but whatever). Growing up as Asian American, I’ve experienced a few racial slurs and offensive gestures directed towards me. As I’ve gotten older and moved to a more diverse college, the taunts have gotten fewer. But I do recall in elementary school being made fun of because of the shape of my eyes. Whether or not I personally find the pictures offensive is irrelevant. The fact is that Miley was making a RACIST gesture. It doesn’t matter that she meant it in a humorous way or if the Asian guy in the picture took offense. Some Asian Americans may be offended by the pictures and others may not. The fact is that she made a racist gesture and she should acknowledge that. Not brush it aside as making a “goofy face.”
If she wasn’t famous and a supposed “role model” for young girls, this issue wouldn’t have gotten the press that it did. But Miley is famous and young girls do look up to her. She should at least acknowledge that she made a racist gesture and not pretend that she didn’t know what she was doing. It really irks me that she just brushed off her racist gesture as a goofy face. She’s not that ignorant. Yes, she might have meant the face in a humorous way, but she still made a racist gesture and should acknowledge that.

The problem with Miley is that she keeps ******** up, making excuses, saying she’ll never do it again, and then turning around and doing something else stupid months later. And each time people shrug it off as her just being a teenager, having fun, that the things she does are things “everyone does” Why is it that people will make excuses for her over and over again, but are never willing to forgive a person for doing one stupid thing?

so, its a rather difficult decision for her, either apologize for the racist insult, or admit she was doin things she shouldnt have been doin and got photographed doin it. even the asian guy in the pic looks like hes flyin too. im suprised nobody has even considered the possibility that they have all been drinkin and tokin, then just decided to take a pic of them all totally ‘chinese eyed’, with the actual asian being ‘wide eyed’. its still kind of a joke, but definately edgy on the racist side. honestly, all the people in that pic, with the exception of Miley, look at least 20, and one guy looks like hes holdin some kind of alcoholic drink. if it was a perfectly innocent situation and nothing more then goofing off without any underage illegal activities, then she should still make a legitimate apology, just for the fact that it has obviously offended ’someone’.
i still think shes one of the worst celebrities currently in the public eye. honestly, there are celebrities (popular) that get rarely any media attention and thats because they dont allow themselves to get into those kinds of situations and the papz find them boring. but when someone like Miley comes along and makes all the news for them, the papz and bloggers swarm. i cant think of any ’situation’ that has been all over the news that she hadnt initiated. she doesnt need to compare herself to Britney, but rather shes more like Paris Hilton.

& me & my friends do make “racist” jokes about my race and other races, but we’re not taking it seriously . Like where i live, the community is mostly filipino & viet . I mean sure there’s a few white people, blacks, mexican, etc, but here, it’s okay too make fun of it, as long as you don’t mean it. Cause trust me, if you do mean it, your butt would get beat up.
