Zac Efron Covers GQ Magazine
Zac Efron does a little dance in this new pic from the upcoming May 2009 issue of GQ magazine .
The 21-year-old actor dished to the mag about his new flick, 17 Again, his future film career and keeping HSM loot in his trunk. Check it:
On keeping a few HSM posters with him at all times: “I’ve kinda got it figured out. I just pull in to the lot at [a movie studio] and they can’t follow me. The first time I did it, they weren’t going to let me in. The guy at the gate was like, ‘What are you gonna do for me?’ I said, ‘What do you want me to do?’He’s like, ‘I got kids.’ And I was like, ‘Well, I got a poster in the trunk!’ It’s smart to keep some swag in the trunk, just in case.”
On what’s in stores for his future: “I’m truly ready right now. I can’t wait, dude. I’m going to do something—something cool. Something people aren’t necessarily expecting.”
On working with 17 Again director Burr Steers: “He messed with my head a little bit. There were scenes where I had to be pissed, so he’d be a total a–hole all morning, to make me a little bit on edge. I had no idea what he was doing until after the movie was over. I just thought he was a huge a–hole. But it turns out he’s incredibly smart. He doesn’t just give you what you want to hear and tell you that you’re doing a great job. It’s a different kind of love and support.”

dude he didnt cuss, these magazines do that they twist the words and add some words, ZAC did NNNOOTTT cuss like that i know 100%
Reposting from JJ:
Reading this interview I wanted to hug him and slap him at the same time. He’s trying way too hard to appeal to men and sound the way he thinks they want him to sound. I felt the same way with the USA weekend interview when the interviewer had to point out that Zac blurted out ‘what do you want me to say, I’m trying to figure out what you want me to say.’
I thought the interviewer was spot on when he suggested that Zac was leaving the Disney bubble only to create a self-made bubble where he refuses to be himself but keeps trying to figure out what people want him to say and be. He then proceeds to work hard at incarnating those but people always see through those as his image is never consistent from interview to interview depending on the target audience.
He is such a hard worker but as the interviewer rightly pointed out, some things are not achieved by sheer hardwork, sometimes you’ve got to relax and let your personality through.
My exasperation with him gets tempered though when I remember that he’s always had to work hard for everything and this is the only way he knows to approach the things that are important to him. I think this GQ interview is very important to him as he wants to snag the male demographic and that’s why he’s trying so hard.
I find it a bit sad because he hinted that he’s not getting the kind of roles he wants but I doubt swearing like a teenager will make a producer cast him say, in a western movie or make adult men take him seriously. I don’t mind swearing at all but this is not believable.
Hopefully, he’ll read this interview and note the observations made by the interviewer. I bet he can sound so much more grown up without appearing as if he’s trying too hard if he just relaxes and lets his real personality through rather than all these images he’s channeling which are frankly not appealing.
When people meet him and work with him, they speak so well of him, I just don’t get why he thinks these fake personalities will do more to further his career than his real self.
I think this is a critical period for him and he’s clearly confused about how to present himself and desperate to make it work. I’m not really sure his pr is guiding him in the right way. Maybe he needs some quality time with his parents.
Another repost:
I’ve also got to say that the interview was a bit too detailed and didn’t cut Zac any slack.
For instance, the interviewer made sure to tell us that Zac knew they were watching him check out the yoga lady, making it obvious that he feels Zac was doing that just to prove a point, (that he wasn’t gay maybe, that he notices women ) and he wanted us to know that.
The whole interview was sprinkled with that sense of ‘this guy is trying to present a certain image and we want the readers to know that.’
I don’t think Zac knew it was going to be presented that way and it’s a bit unfair to him. It just heightens the feeling that he’s trying too hard.
I don’t get why Zac is being attacked over this article. Many celebrities reinvent themselves for interviews depending on the publication. Jennifer Aniston is usually seen as the girl-next-door, yet she posed nude for GQ a few months ago. Does that make her a bad person?
Just because Zac is trying to be edgier for select publications like GQ and Interview magazines does not make him a lost soul who is having trouble figuring out where he fits in. These interviews show he is savvy enough to cater to the audiences that these particular publications appeal to. That’s called marketing oneself, which is needed in the cut-throat entertainment business.
Zac is an adult and doesn’t need to go back to mom and dad to regroup. He’s doing just fine and seems to have a good head on his shoulders. Besides, actions speak louder than words: He’s been in a committed relationship for nearly four years with the same person and has not been in any trouble with the law. Can’t say the same for some of Zac’s peers in the industry.

……………………….
Sorry, I doubt anyone who read the WHOLE interview including the way the interviewer described Zac , will call Zac edgy or savvy (please check the dictionary meaning of the words).
He was presented as a young man trying hard to be and say what he thinks he needs to be and say. It wasn’t hinted at in the interview, it was spelt out categorically. You might want to go back and read the whole interview.
On what’s in stores for his future: “I’m truly ready right now. I can’t wait, dude. I’m going to do something—something cool. Something people aren’t necessarily expecting.”
I wounder what that means.
#81 Everyone can have their own interpretations on the article. I have mine. And I have a grad degree in marketing communications, so I’m pretty sure I know what edgy and savvy mean.
all the people are you blind????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????’
zac change
Apparently he wants to be cool BUT sounds like a player
I DON’T KNOW WHY VANESSA SUPPORT HIM
C’MON ”V ”STAY AWAY
Awwww just saw zac on the david letterman show, he looked so gorgeous on the show and was actually really nervous to be there too, you can so tell when he was talking to david it was so cute and funny lol I think he’s very overwelmed with all of his success and is happy about it at all at the same time. everyone needs to give him a break about the whole GQ interview he’s still young and new to the business and I think he has a great career ahead of him, as long as he stays on the right track like he says he will, he will be an even greater actor
Luv ya zac, support you in anything you do and comes your way
i think there’s something wrong with this picture…i mean, his head looks a lot bigger than his body….lol..anyway, Zac is still hoT!!!
Ooooh, He’s soooo STRONG!!! Not loving what they’ve done with his hair…but, all in all, he looks HOT!!!
@Naomi:
I don’t really see the harm in that. He’s finding himself, I don’t know why he should be belittled for that. The interviewer analyzed him extensively but not really negatively. He’s at a pivotal point right now, being calculated the way he is and was pointed out by the interviewer seems essential. Each to their own I guess. And I suppose for some people he will forever be trying “too hard” regardless of what he does.
@Dina:
Yeah he was good in the interview even though I think Letterman is one of the worst talk show hosts. Having looked beyond just this site, with Zac’s recent interviews and the SNL appearance a lot of people seem to be catching on to him. I agree he has good things ahead of him.
Zac is grown up I am so gold he is moving away from playing Teenage roles. I can’t wait for 17 again I am going to go see this Friday.
That’s fair enough. We’re all different and will see things differently. Some of his target audience will see with you, others with me.
I don’t think my comment belittled him for ‘finding himself’. I pretty much thought he was lost in the interview and that he was presented in a very unappealing, defensive and immature manner.
I compare this to the Interview mag interview where he came across as articulate, intelligent and interesting. He was also attempting to reach a mature male audience with that and he was also finding himself.
Let’s agree to disagree. For his sake, I hope most adults agree with you.
@Naomi:
I never said you were the one belittling him. I agree with you on a lot of your points regarding the whole thing. I do disagree about how you think he was presented overall and I don’t think this was too different than any other GQ spread. You’re right though, we’ll all have to agree to disagree. JJ seems to have been filled with negativity but beyond this place, there were a lot of positive reactions. This was geared towards adult males and I can’t say I know how it came across to them but if this didn’t do it, he did win over a lot of people in that demographic through SNL at least.
#91,
…………………….
I’ll agree with you there. I thought SNL was really great and hopefully has done more to show his talent and potential as a bonafide actor.
@Karen:
I’m going to have to disagree here. She didn’t say she didn’t like kids. If it’s the article I’m thinking of they got most everything wrong. I have read where she said she wasn’t ready for them.
If she didn’t like kids she wouldn’t be involved in children charities and I don’t know anyone in the public arena who would say something like that even if it was true.
zac is ddayyummmm SSEEXXYYYY!!! he is ssoo STRONG TO HOLD HIMSELF UPP!!! mann!
i agree with katty. if you look at the article in JJ, he says fuuck a lot in this. and they aren’t really necessary.
oh, and before someone started attacking me and saying “OMFG, HE’S AN ADULT!! LET HIM SWEAR, U BIITCH!!!1″
that’s just my opinian. even i swear myself, but he said it almost 15 times… and that’s not even a full article.
but anywhoooo,
OMFG THESE SHOTS WERE FHSBSFUWQPSADNH HOTTTT!!
not really liking the cover pic, but the shot of him in the blue shirt is… *drools*
@Naomi:
i totally agree with everything you said. you couldn’t have said it better. zac’s awesome though, he’s going through the things that any young adult goes through. he’s got a great future.
In my opinion this article shows Zac is growing up. As people like Karen & Naoimi have already mentioned. GQ is an ADULT magazine,therefore will be written in a way that appeals to the intended target market which is ADULTS. I understand why some of his younger fans may be a little upset over his cussing but what you have to understand is,zac is now trying to break in to older more serious roles. He is not trying to alienate younger fans, he is growing up. I would hazard a guess that all the interviews that are coming out recently for the promotion of 17 Again are more “Zac” then any of the HSM interviews ever were.
I think its admirable he is growing up, I don’t think it will be the easiest transition to go from being seen as a disney actor after appearing in 3 HSM Movies, to becoming known as a serious actor, he has his work cut out. But I think he is already going the right way with 17 Again,Me & Orson Welles,and now The Death & Life of Charlie St Cloud .
I have the feeling Zac will be around for many years to come, if he continues the way he is going.
@Naomi: Great comments, Naomi. I agree with you. The only thing is that we’ve all read interviews with big stars and they didn’t feel the need to say f…all the time. So I would say to Zac that he should lay off it when talking to anyone in the print media. Secondly, I think he is trying to find a strategy to have a long career when, in fact, his personality and talent will determine if he has a long career. Don’t over think it, Zac. Have confidence in the fact that people like you, that you have the talent and that maybe being edgy isn’t the way to go (is Tom Hanks edgy?). I’m thinking of Brad Pitt who decided to go edgy and made several horrendous films filled with violence and it diminished him (Fight Club, Seven etc).
Anyway, the whole GQ thing didn’t ring true so I’m assuming that the writer put his own spin on things. Love you Zac.
Lol he got rid of the questions were he curses like all the time
